The ChatGPT application from OpenAI has surpassed the threshold of one billion monthly active users worldwide, making it one of the fastest-growing applications in modern digital history, according to estimates by Sensor Tower, a market research company, reflecting the significant acceleration in the global spread of artificial intelligence technologies.

According to the data, ChatGPT reached this milestone in May, just three years after its launch, outpacing the growth rate of various major applications such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Google Maps, indicating a profound shift in user behavior towards generative AI tools.

This achievement comes amid rising competition within the AI market, especially between OpenAI and companies like Anthropic, which developed the Claude application, as companies strive to enhance their share in a rapidly growing market experiencing unprecedented global expansion.

According to the report, ChatGPT users in the United States who installed the Claude application in the first quarter of 2026 showed a 5% decrease in their usage of ChatGPT one month after installation, compared to their previous average usage, reflecting the impact of direct competition within the AI market.

In contrast, Sensor Tower data revealed that the Claude application reached approximately 56 million monthly active users by the end of the second quarter, achieving an annual growth rate of nearly 640%, which surpasses the growth rate of ChatGPT at around 62% during the same period, indicating intensified competition within the AI sector.

These figures suggest that the AI market is entering a new phase of global expansion, as growth is no longer limited to a single application but has become an open race among multiple platforms competing for users and technological dominance, while ChatGPT continues to solidify its position as one of the key drivers of this digital transformation.
