Data released by the UK Office for National Statistics on Tuesday morning showed an increase in unemployment benefits that was less than expected, along with a rise in the unemployment rate within the UK during November, reaching its highest level since April.

According to the data, the number of new unemployment benefit claims in the UK rose by about 0.7 thousand claims in December, which is better than expectations that indicated an increase of around 10.3 thousand claims only, after it had recorded an increase of 0.3 thousand claims in the previous November, which was positively revised from 0.3 thousand claims.

At the same time, the unemployment rate in the UK rose to 4.4% during the three months ending in November on a year-on-year basis, while it was expected that the rate would remain stable at 4.3%, after also recording 4.3% in the three months ending in the previous October.

Additionally, the average wages in the UK, excluding bonuses, rose by 5.6% during the three months ending in November on a year-on-year basis, while markets had expected an increase in average wages of 5.6%, after the UK recorded an increase of 5.2% in average wages in the previous reading for the quarter ending in October.
