Cryptocurrencies under new regulatory pressure in the UK

The UK's Financial Conduct Authority has warned football clubs about the risks associated with dealing with unlicensed cryptocurrency companies in sponsorship deals, indicating that these agreements could expose fans to direct financial risks, in addition to legal and regulatory risks related to money laundering and damage to the clubs' reputations.

The authority explained that it has reached out to several Premier League clubs and other sports institutions after noticing that some cryptocurrency companies are using sports sponsorships as a means to promote financial services within the UK without obtaining the necessary licenses from regulatory bodies.

It added that these companies might exploit the immense popularity of football to reach a wide audience of fans through marketing partnerships with prominent clubs, which could lead to the marketing of unregulated financial products and increase the chances of consumers facing losses.

The authority confirmed that fans' trust in their sports clubs makes them more susceptible to being influenced by advertisements related to cryptocurrencies, warning against exploiting this loyalty to promote unsafe or unlicensed platforms or products.

It also emphasized that dealing with unlicensed cryptocurrency companies could lead to a complete loss of funds, with no regulatory protection for consumers in the event of disputes or financial losses.

This warning comes at a time when the importance of commercial sponsorship is increasing as a major source of revenue for football clubs, alongside broadcasting revenues, making cryptocurrency deals part of a bigger shift in the sports economy.

Meanwhile, the UK is working to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework to govern the cryptocurrency market, as part of a plan aimed at imposing an official licensing system in the coming years, ensuring investor protection and enhancing transparency in this rapidly growing sector.
