On Tuesday, ECB member and Governor of the Bank of France, Villeroy, made several statements regarding inflation and the interest rate reduction cycle, the most notable of which are as follows:

  • There is a reasonable consensus that we will make the decision for each meeting individually.
  • Among major central banks, the European Central Bank has the simplest path "regarding monetary policy".
  • Our view on inflation is completely confirmed.
  • The European Central Bank does not follow a predetermined path regarding interest rates.
  • I remain vigilant but not worried about inflation in the euro area.
  • Progress towards victory over inflation is on the right track.
  • If we are decisive about the pace of interest rate cuts, then the ECB will not need larger reductions.
  • However, it is not out of the question for the ECB to reduce the interest rate at a faster pace in the future.
