In May 2006, Merck acquired Abmaxis, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and optimization of monoclonal antibody (MAb) products for human therapeutics and diagnostics. In June 2006, the Company acquired GlycoFi, Inc., a biotechnology company engaged in the field of yeast glycoengineering. In December 2006, Merck acquired Sirna Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company engaged in developing a class of medicines based on ribonucleic acid (RNA) interference (RNAi) technology. In November 2006, the Company acquired an 11% stake in FoxHollow Technologies, Inc. (FoxHollow). In September 2007, Merck completed the acquisition of NovaCardia, Inc., a privately held clinical-stage pharmaceutical company.
